March 26th is a special day for chocolate lovers everywhere — it’s World Cacao Day! As a self-proclaimed chocolate lover (the good kind, of course), I’ve always been fascinated by this magical ingredient. Living far from cacao-growing regions has taught me to appreciate its rarity and quality, and I’ve learned to create my own chocolatey delights from scratch. But cacao is so much more than just the foundation of chocolate — it’s a superfood, a spiritual ally, and a symbol of ancient traditions, with incredible properties that benefit our health, especially for women and dancers.

The Sacred Origins of Cacao

Cacao has been revered for centuries, dating back to the ancient civilizations of Mesoamerica. The Mayans and Aztecs believed cacao was a gift from the gods, and it played a central role in their rituals and daily lives. In fact, the Mayans worshipped IxCacao, the goddess of cacao, who was associated with fertility, abundance, and the heart. She was often depicted holding a cacao pod, symbolizing nourishment for both the body and the soul.

In cacao ceremonies, this sacred ingredient is still used to connect with the divine, open the heart, and foster community. Cacao ceremonies involve drinking a rich, bitter brew made from pure cacao, often accompanied by meditation, music, and intention-setting. It’s believed that cacao expands the heart chakra, promoting love, compassion, and emotional healing.

The Magic of Cacao for the Body and Mind

Cacao, the raw form of cocoa, is not jus delicious, is also packed with nutrients that make it a true superfood — a nutritional powerhouse:

1. Heart-Opening Properties: cacao contains compounds like theobromine and phenylethylamine (PEA), which are known to elevate mood and stimulate the release of endorphins. This makes it a natural mood booster and a heart-opening ally.

2. Energy and Circulation: similar to caffeine (but gentler), cacao improves blood flow and oxygen delivery, making it a great energy booster for dancers and athletes.

3. Magnesium-Rich: cacao is one of the best sources of magnesium, which helps relax muscles, reduce cramps, and support bone health — perfect for women and active individuals.

4. Antioxidant Powerhouse: packed with flavonoids, cacao fights free radicals, reduces inflammation, and supports overall health.

5. Emotional Healing: In spiritual practices, cacao is believed to help release emotional blockages, making it a tool for self-discovery and healing.

A Simple, Plant-Based Recipe: Chocolate-Covered Strawberries

To celebrate World Cacao Day, here’s an easy, plant-based recipe that combines the richness of cacao with the freshness of strawberries, because it's spring time. It’s quick, delicious, and perfect for satisfying your chocolate cravings.

Ingredients: 1 cup fresh strawberries (washed and dried); 1 tbsp cacao powder (unsweetened); 2 tbsp coconut oil (melted); 1 tbsp agave syrup (or maple syrup); 100g dark chocolate bar (70% or higher, optional for extra richness)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Chocolate Coating: in a small bowl, mix the cacao powder, melted coconut oil, and agave syrup until smooth, and add slowly the melted dark chocolate bar.

2. Dip the Strawberries: hold each strawberry by the stem and dip it into the chocolate mixture, swirling to coat it evenly.

3. Set and Chill: place the chocolate-covered strawberries on a parchment-lined tray and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or until the chocolate hardens. Serve and enjoy!

Cacao is more than just an ingredient — it’s a nourishing superfood, and a symbol of love and abundance. Whether you’re indulging in chocolate-covered strawberries, sipping a ceremonial brew, or simply savoring a piece of dark chocolate, take a moment to honor the magic of cacao this March 26th.
