Today, I want to talk about something close to my heart: starting ballet (or restarting it) after 30. As someone who began dancing at the age of 5, took a break for a couple of years before hitting 30, and is now preparing to return after recovering from injuries, I know a thing or two about fresh starts. And let me tell you — it's never too late to fall in love with ballet all over again.

Before I start, bare in mind that I've been a professional ballerina from an early age and thinking about retiring before my 30's was not something awful, since many dancers do it. That been said, let's go!

My Ballet Journey: A Story of Re-beginnings

Ballet has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I started young, immersed in the beauty of movement, discipline, and artistry. But life happens, right? I took a break in my late 20s because I got injured and very confused, since my life as a professional ballerina was absolutely stressful and absolutely penniless, and coming back to it felt like starting from scratch. Now, again, after some time off to recover from injuries, I’m gearing up to return once more. And you know what? Each time feels like a new adventure — a chance to rediscover my body, my passion, and my strength.

If you're thinking about starting ballet after 30 (or returning to it like me), here are some tips to make your journey joyful and fulfilling:

1. Be Kind to Yourself

Starting or restarting ballet as an adult can feel intimidating. You might compare yourself to younger dancers or feel frustrated if your body doesn't move the way it used to. But here's the truth: ballet is for everyone, no matter your age or experience level. Celebrate every small victory, whether it's nailing a plié or simply showing up to class.

2. Find the Right Class

Look for beginner or adult ballet classes in your area or online. Many studios offer classes specifically designed for adults, focusing on technique, flexibility, and fun without the pressure of perfection. If you're returning after a break, don't be afraid to start slow — your body will thank you.

3. Invest in the Basics

You don't need a fancy wardrobe to start ballet, but having the right gear can make a difference. A good pair of ballet shoes, comfortable leggings, and a supportive sports bra are all you need to get started. Oh, and don't forget a water bottle — hydration is key!

4. Warm Up and Stretch

As we age, our bodies need a little extra TLC. Before every class or practice session, spend time warming up and stretching. Focus on your hips, hamstrings, and ankles — these areas tend to get tight, especially if you're new to ballet or returning after a break.

5. Listen to Your Body

Ballet is demanding, and it's easy to push yourself too hard. Pay attention to your body's signals. If something feels off or painful, take a step back. Recovery and rest are just as important as practice.

6. Embrace the Learning Process

Ballet is a journey, not a destination. You might not master a pirouette overnight, and that's okay! Enjoy the process of learning and improving. Every class is an opportunity to grow, both as a dancer and as a person.

7. Connect with the Community

One of the best parts of ballet is the sense of community. Whether it's your classmates, your instructor, or an online group of adult ballet enthusiasts, surrounding yourself with supportive people can make all the difference.

8. Celebrate Your Why

Why do you want to start ballet? Is it for the joy of movement? To challenge yourself? To reconnect with a childhood passion? Whatever your reason, hold onto it. Let it inspire you on the days when things feel tough.

Final Thoughts

Starting ballet after 30 (or returning to it) is a beautiful act of self-love. It's about embracing your body, your story, and your potential. As I prepare to step back into the studio after my injury recovery, I'm reminded that every beginning is a chance to grow, learn, and shine.

So, if you've been dreaming of slipping on a pair of ballet shoes, I say go for it! Your journey is uniquely yours, and it's never too late to dance!
